Past The USS Michigan Landing Party commemorates the Sailors and Marines who served aboard the USS Michigan during the Civil War. Launched in 1842, the USS Michigan was the first iron-hulled warship in the US Navy. It was both sail and steam powered. Rated a steam powered frigate it sailed the Great Lakes during the Civil War. Among its duties was guarding the Confederate prisoners on Johnson’s Island in Lake Erie near current day Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.
Present Members of the current USS Michigan Landing Party are located throughout the state of Michigan. In addition to N-SSA Skirmishing, our members actively participate in numerous Civil War Living History portrays, provide hands-on educational experiences for schools and colleges, and present Civil War-themed programs at Civil War Roundtables.
